You’re holding one of the most important tools in the history of photography. Fifty years of images, from editorial shoots to scientific research to Hollywood productions, have been built on the foundation this chart provides. Now it’s yours.
The ColorChecker Classic is a 4×6 grid of 24 color patches, arranged in four rows of six. Each patch was scientifically formulated to represent the color of something real in the natural world, and each one reflects light exactly the way its real-world counterpart does, under any illumination, with any color reproduction process. That last part is what makes it special. These aren’t arbitrary colors chosen to look nice. They are calibrated references that behave predictably under any light source you put them under.
The four rows break down like this:
The colors you actually photograph. Dark Skin, Light Skin, Blue Sky, Foliage, Blue Flower, Bluish Green. These patches exist because skin, sky, and leaves are what cameras most commonly get wrong, and what human eyes most immediately notice when something is off.
Orange, Purplish Blue, Moderate Red, Purple, Yellow Green, Orange Yellow. These check how your camera handles colors that fall between the primaries, the territory where most real-world color lives.
Blue, Green, Red, Yellow, Magenta, Cyan. The building blocks of both additive (RGB) and subtractive (CMYK) color reproduction. What your camera thinks red is and what red actually is are often two different things. This row finds that gap.
Six patches from white to black. This is the row you’ll use most often day to day. A neutral gray that reads neutral in your image means your color is balanced. A gray that reads warm or cool tells you exactly what to fix, without guessing.
This chart is a precision instrument. The patches are calibrated. Their accuracy is the whole point. Compromising that accuracy compromises everything built on top of it.
Never touch the color patches. Not once. The oils from your fingers degrade the surface over time, and a degraded patch gives you bad data. Bad data produces bad profiles. Bad profiles produce bad color. The whole chain breaks at the first link.
Hold it by the edges. That’s what they’re there for.
Store it away from direct light when not in use. Extended UV exposure fades the patches over time. The Passport case protects the target automatically. For the standalone Classic, store it face-down or in a sleeve.
Replace it. Calibrite recommends replacing your ColorChecker every two to four years depending on how much light exposure it has accumulated. A faded or contaminated chart is worse than no chart at all, because it gives you false confidence. Know when to retire it.
Getting a usable reference frame sounds simple. A few things go wrong more often than they should.
Fill the frame appropriately. The chart should occupy at least 5 to 10 percent of your frame for the profiling software to read it reliably. Too small and the math breaks down. Too far away and you’ll get inaccurate readings. With the Passport version, this means getting closer than you might expect.
Shoot it in the same light as your subject. This is the rule that matters most. A chart photographed under different light than your subject is useless for profiling that subject. Same location, same light source, same angle of incidence. What the chart sees is what your profile will be built on.
Shoot it flat, not at an angle. The chart should be parallel to your camera’s sensor plane. Shooting it at an angle introduces glare on some patches and shadow on others, which corrupts the readings. Use the built-in stand on the Passport, or lay the standalone Classic flat on a surface.
No glare on the patches. Check your shot before you walk away from the scene. If you can see a hot spot or reflection on any patch, reposition the chart or move your light source. Glare reads as overexposure. Overexposed patches cannot be profiled accurately.
Shoot it in RAW. Always. JPEG processing bakes in your camera’s color interpretation before the profiling software can see the raw sensor data. RAW gives the software the unprocessed truth. That’s what it needs to build an accurate profile.
One frame per lighting setup, per lens. Every time you change lenses or move to a new lighting situation, shoot a fresh reference frame. A profile built on your 85mm does not represent what your 35mm is doing. A Color Perfectionist accounts for every variable in the chain.
Once you have your reference frame, the workflow is straightforward.
Open Calibrite PROFILER, load your RAW file, and let the software detect the chart automatically. It reads each patch, compares your camera’s rendering of those patches against their known reference values, and calculates a correction profile specific to your camera, your lens, and your light. That profile is saved as a DNG or ICC file and installed directly into Lightroom.
From that point forward, you apply the profile at import. Every image from that session starts from a foundation of known, accurate color.
You don’t rebuild this every shoot. One profile per camera body, per lens, per major lighting type: daylight, tungsten, strobe. Build the library methodically. Then trust it.
One reminder that belongs here: all of this only works if your monitor has been calibrated and you’re working from a custom display profile. If your screen is lying to you, accurate color from your camera just gets distorted at a later stage in the chain. Calibrate your monitor first. That step is not optional.
A custom camera profile isn’t just a technical deliverable. It’s a creative foundation.
When you know your color is accurate at capture, every decision you make in the edit is intentional. You’re not correcting for problems you introduced. You’re building on truth. The warmth you add in post is a choice. The saturation you pull back is a choice. The mood you create is a choice.

Your chart is 50 years old as an idea, and it still works because the physics hasn’t changed. Light behaves the same way it always has. What’s changed is your ability to measure it, correct for it, and create from a place of certainty.
