Brand Ambassador Ian Macdonald-Smith

Since 1987 Ian has published 10 monograph books, had numerous exhibitions, been included in group shows and art fairs. Ian photographs many series with his favourites being:

‘Watercolours’ abstract patterns produced from objects reflected in various bodies of water
‘Rockin’ macro images of rocks, minerals and meteorites

‘Window Shopping’ surreal single image montages

‘WhiteonWhite’ abstract minimalist architectural series

Ian travels primarily in Europe in his motorhome to grow the many series. Colour has always been his preference “Accurate colour is critical even for my abstract series of nature.”

What inspired you to become a photographer/videographer?

Growing up on the stunning but small island of Bermuda, pouring over National Geographics and dreaming of seeing as much of the planet as possible.

What is your photography style?

Nature photographer, travel photographer, abstract photographer. Can I wear all those hats?

How did you get to where you are now?

Hard work, sacrifice, and passion, like most successful photographers. The field is always competitive, and it was important to establish a style and have reasonable rates initially. I developed a few portfolios of things I enjoyed photographing and, in 1999, hit the road to expand on those series.

Why is color management important to your workflow?

Accurate colour is critical, from camera profiles to a calibrated screen to printer output. I always want the best colour possible and for it to be real and realistic.

What are your favorite brands you have worked with?

X-Rite, and now Calibrite, of course: Ambassador 2009 – present
Wacom: Evangelist 2012 – present
Tamrac: consultant 2004-15
Simply Canvas: Evangelist 2008 – present
Olympus Visionary: 1999-2009
Nik Software: Beta tester 2006-10
Litra: Evangelist 2018-2022
Leica: Ambassador for Leica S2 2010-13

What would you say is your greatest achievement to this day?

Publishing my latest book ‘Watercolours in a Second – introducing the genre of Self-Expressionism to the world of art and which is unique to photography.

What is an interesting fact about yourself?

I have monocular vision.

What is a top tip for people who aspire to do what you do?

Work with passion to create your own vision and signature style/s, and enjoy the process.
