The objective of this document is to ensure printer Driver optimum media settings are configured and to avoid the printer driver applying any automatic (and potentially variable) color adjustments – so you have an ideal and stable bases for making and applying printer profiles.

Make sure you have the latest printer drivers installed on your system

Once you have checked you have the latest and correct printer driver installed, proceed to configure your printer driver for your media.

Details for Canon and Epson Printer Drivers on MacOS and Windows are outlined here. This can also be referenced in general terms, to assist with printer driver configuration of other printer brands.

MacOS — Canon Printer Driver Configuration

These instructions are for most MacOS Canon drivers — Some drivers may differ slightly from these options.

1. Printer Driver Settings

• In the print dialogue, look for and click on:
  • ‘Print Settings’, or ‘Printer Options’ (button name may vary by driver)
    This opens the Canon printer options.

2. Go to the ‘Color Matching’ Section

• In the dropdown choose:
  • Color Matching
    Select ‘Canon Color Matching’ (Not ColorSync).

3. Select ‘Quality & Media’ or ‘Main’ Tab

• Media Type (e.g. Photo Paper Pro Luster): Select the correct paper type for the one you are using. This is important as it sets an ideal ink weight for the media type.
• Print Quality (Standard or High): Set this to your preferred option.
• Rendering Intent – Set this to No Color Correction.

Tip: If you are using a third-party paper, they will often list the corresponding printer manufacturer’s media type names on their web site.

4. Select ‘Color Options’

• These should all be set to default or ‘0’

5. Save Settings (Recommended)

• Save your custom Preset (give it a meaningful name, such as “ICC Workflow – No Color Adjustment”):
  • Click Presets > Save Current Settings as Preset…

Once all settings are applied print the target.

The Print Driver Preset can then be used in future to print color targets from Calibrite PROFILER, and for printing work from color managed applications such as Adobe PhotoShop/Lightroom, using the ICC profiles you have created.

MacOS — Epson Printer Driver Configuration

These instructions are for most MacOS Epson drivers — Some drivers may differ slightly from these options.

1. Printer Driver Settings

• In the print dialogue click on:
  • ‘Printer Options’ (button name may vary by driver)
    This will open the Epson driver’s settings.

2. Go to Printer Options Section

• In the Epson Printer Options window:
  • Select Color Matching from the dropdown.
• In Color Matching, you will typically see two options:
  • EPSON Color Controls
  • ColorSync
• Choose EPSON Color Controls

3. Select Printer Settings/Features (button name may vary by driver)

• Another window will open when you select Printer Settings:
  • Media Type: (e.g. Premium Gloss Photo Paper): Select the correct paper type for the one you are using. This is important as it sets an ideal ink weight for the media type.
  • Color: Color
  • Color Settings: Choose Off (No Color Adjustment)
  • Print Quality: Choose the desired resolution and other preferences.

Tip: If you are using a third-party paper, they will often list the corresponding printer manufacturer’s media type names on their web site.

4. Save Settings (Recommended)

• Save your custom Preset (give it a meaningful name, such as “ICC Workflow – No Color Adjustment”):
  • Click Presets > Save Current Settings as Preset…

Windows — Canon Printer Driver Configuration

These instructions are for most Windows Canon drivers — Some drivers may differ slightly from these options.

1. Printer Driver Settings

• In the print dialogue, look for and click on:
  • ‘Printer Properties’ or ‘Preferences’ (depending on the driver).

2. Go to the ‘Main’ Tab

3. Click the ‘Color/Intensity’ Button:

• Under Color Adjustment, click on:
  • Color/Intensity > Manual > Set…
• This opens the Manual Color Adjustment dialog.
• In the Manual Color Adjustment dialog, you’ll see options:
  • Driver Matching
  • ICM
  • None
• Select ‘None’ to completely disable color correction in the Canon driver.

4. Set Paper Type and Print Quality

• Back in the Main tab:
  • Media Type: (e.g. Photo Paper Pro Luster): Select the correct paper type for the one you are using. This is important as it sets an ideal ink weight for the media type.
  • Choose Print Quality (your preferred quality)

Tip: If you are using a third-party paper, they will often list the corresponding printer manufacturer’s media type names on their web site.

5. Save Settings (Recommended)

• Click ‘Save Settings’ or create a ‘Preset’ if your driver allows (give it a meaningful name, such as “ICC Workflow – No Color Adjustment”).

• Once all settings are applied print the target.

These settings can then be used in future to print color targets from Calibrite PROFILER, and for printing work from color managed applications such as Adobe PhotoShop/Lightroom, using the ICC profiles you have created.

Windows and Epson Printer Workflow

These instructions are for most Windows Epson drivers — Some drivers may differ slightly from these options.

1. Printer Driver Settings

• In the print dialogue click on:
  • ‘Printer Properties’ or ‘Preferences’ (depending on the driver).

2. Go to the ‘Main’ or ‘Advanced’ Tab

• Depending on your printer model and driver version, you will see options like:
  • Main tab (or possibly ‘Advanced’,‘Custom’ or More Options).

3. In the Color Correction section Click Advanced or Custom, if available.

• Set Color Management option to ‘Off (No Color Adjustment)’
  • Some Epson drivers may have a color settings option in the Main tab.
  • Look for Color Management or Color Controls section.
• You’ll typically see options like:
  • Color Controls
  • ICM
  • Off (No Color Adjustment)
• Select:Off (No Color Adjustment)

4. Check Paper Type and Quality Settings

• Print Quality/Resolution: Set to your required quality.
