iPad Pro Calibration Workflow

Reference Mode calibration is available on the following Apple® iPad Pro models (and potentially subsequent models)  – for iPad OS 16 or later:

• iPad Pro 13-inch (M4)
• iPad Pro 11-inch (M4)
• iPad Pro 12.9-inch (5th or 6th generation)

Requires a supported Calibrite Display device:

• Calibrite Display Plus HL

A: Configure iPad Pro Settings

• Open the Settings app, then tap Display & Brightness.
• Tap Advanced (last of the Display & Brightness settings).
• Turn ON Reference Mode.
• Tap Fine Tune Calibration.
• If there is any existing data, click Restore Defaults.

B: Measure iPad Pro white point

• Open a pure white reference image on the iPad Pro – if required, click to download and open a reference white image file.
• Connect a supported Calibrite Display Plus HL device.
• Launch calibrite PROFILER.
• Select: Utilities > Measure Screen Output.
• Place Calibrite Display Plus HL device on iPad Pro white reference image.
• Click Measure.
• Make a note of the measured x,y coordinates as well as the cd/m2 value for luminance.

C: iPad Pro Calibration Settings

• Return to iPad Pro Settings > Fine-Tune Calibration.
• Enter the measured values White Point x, y coordinates and the Luminance cd/m2 value in the corresponding MEASURED field
• Enter the target White Point x,y coordinates and the Luminance cd/m2 value in the corresponding TARGET fields.
  • For a Target of D65 (or 65000k) use x = 0.3127, y = 0.3290.
  • Luminance (cd/m2): 120 – or your preferred brightness depending on your environment.
  • For a Target of D50 White Point (print conditions) use x = 0.3457, y = 0.3585.
  • Luminance (cd/m2): 160 – or your preferred brightness depending on your environment
  • Alternatively, x y coordinates for other white point values can be found through Adobe® Photoshop by selecting Custom RGB in the Colour Settings window, or search for an online calculator.
• Tap Done when all figures have been set.

D: iPad Pro Calibration Complete and Verification 

The iPad Pro display is now calibrated in Reference Mode to your specified display conditions.
To verify the outcome, remeasure as follows:

• Display the white reference on iPad Pro – if required, click to download and open a reference white image file.
• Return to calibrite PROFILER and repeat measurement process.
• Measured values should correspond to target values.
• The iPad Pro is now calibrated to your specified display conditions.

The verification process can also be used at a later date, to determine if the iPad Pro requires recalibration.

E: Switching Between Display Modes

When the full brightness and contrast of the iPad Pro is required, simply switch off Reference Mode.
Switching Reference Mode back on will return to its calibrated state, and as with other display technology we recommend recalibration every 3-4 weeks. For which you can retain the TARGET values, remeasure with calibrite PROFILER > Utility > Measure Screen Output, and just update the iPad Pro: Reference Mode > Fine-Tune Calibration > MEASURED values.
