Brand Ambassador Joe Brady

I have been a professional photographer for 40 years, full-time for the last 15. While working in the photo industry, I have produced educational videos for many equipment brands including X-Rite, Profoto, Hensel, Bowens, Sekonic, Ilford, Epson, Fujifilm, PocketWizard, Nissin, Fotopro, and more. I teach both color workflow and digital printing workshops at photo seminars in the US, and we are one of the original producers of educational videos for X-Rite on the benefits and use of products such as the ColorChecker Passport and Monitor and Printer Profile gear.

I have also produced more than 400 videos on YouTube covering all aspects of Color Workflow, Landscape Photography, Portraying Posing and Lighting, and Image editing and enhancements with Adobe Lightroom and Photoshop. My videos currently have over 3 1/2 million views.

During each year, I teach 15+ week-long Landscape Photography Workshops, specializing in the American West and Western Europe.

What inspired you to become a photographer/videographer?

I love the idea of creating a landscape photograph that is a portrait of a place, that tells a story of what it is like to visit there, and what feelings it instills in the viewer. I also love the idea of capturing a moment in time that will never happen again. I am fortunate to be able to travel to places that inspire me and share finished photographs with people who also love the outdoors, particularly majestic landscapes.

What is your photography style?

My goal is to create landscape photographs that draw you in; that help you to feel what it was like to visit the place.

How did you get to where you are now?

A long path started as an amateur photographer way back in high school, then jobs in advertising and marketing, including shooting catalog product photography. I started doing weddings  – for about 10 years, then moved onto teaching portrait posing and lighting. Finally, I realized my ultimate goal of being a full-time Landscape Photographer and Teacher.

Why is color management important to your workflow?

For anyone who makes prints of their work, color workflow is critical to ensure consistent and repeatable results. Otherwise, you are guessing and leaving the final results to chance – something that often fails.

What are your favorite brands you have worked with?

I recently switched over to cameras from OM Systems. Before that, I shot Fujifilm, Sony (I was a member of Sony’s Artisans Group), Canon, Nikon, Phase One, and Leaf. I also enjoy working with both Epson and Canon printers, and a handful of paper manufacturers including Ilford.

What would you say is your greatest achievement to this day?

Two successful, well-adjusted, and happy children.

What is an interesting fact about yourself?

I am also a musician, playing piano, guitar, and wind instruments. I compose my own music and I am currently working on an album. I also paint with watercolors. In my spare time, I write working (on a sci-fi novel right now) and I still pursue training in the martial arts, where I currently hold black belts in two different styles.

What is a top tip for people who aspire to do what you do?

Shoot for yourself. If the images you create make you smile, then you are a successful photographer.
