Ideal Settings for Manual Screen Calibration for Photography with ColorChecker Display, Display Pro and Display Plus Systems using Calibrite PROFILER

We are often asked what the ideal settings are for profiling a monitor for a photographic workflow. Please follow the guide below that takes you through the settings and options to obtain the best possible profile for your monitor.

  1. Firstly, reset your monitor back to factory defaults; on most monitors, there is a setting in the on-screen menu (OSD). The OSD is usually accessed by pressing the menu buttons on the front of the monitor. It is always a good idea to familiarise yourself with the settings available through the monitor’s OSD, as they’re used whenever you profile the monitor.
  2. If the monitor has a colour temperature setting in the OSD, set it to 6500K (D65).
  3. Ensure your device is plugged into a USB port and start the Calibrite PROFILER application. Once it starts, click on the Monitor icon in the ‘Profile my’ section, then select ‘Advanced’ in the drop down.
  4. In the ‘Display and Technology Type’ section, select the correct backlight type for your screen (found in the display’s instruction manual or on the manufacturer’s website).
  5. In the ‘Match to’ section, select the ‘Photo’ icon; this will enter all the recommended settings for a photographic workflow (see these settings in the ‘Progress and Review’ strip at the top of the application window).
  6. Then click ‘Next’.
  7. In the ‘Ready to Measure’ section, click on ‘Start Measurement’.
  8. In the ‘Hardware Controls’ section, select the ‘Brightness’ option, by clicking on the box underneath the icon. This will then show a tick, then click ‘Continue’.
  9. Follow the instructions to put the ambient light diffuser in the correct position and place the device on the circle at the centre of the screen. Make sure that the monitor’s OSD is not under the device, as this will give incorrect readings. There is usually an OSD setting to move the window away from the centre of the screen.
  10. The profile will then run. Firstly, you will be prompted to adjust the screen’s brightness. Using the meter on the left, adjust the screen’s brightness until you get a tick and have reached the 120cd level.
  11. Once the brightness is set correctly, click Next and select ‘Start Measurement’.
  12. The application will then measure a set of colour patches. Once the readings have been made you can fold the ambient light diffuser back over the lens for its protection. Then click ‘Next’.
  13. In the next screen, you can visually review the measurement results and then click ‘Next’.
  14. In the final screen, save and name the profile and select a reminder if you wish; we usually recommend 3 to 4 weeks. That profile will automatically save as the default profile on the system.
  15. In the ‘Measurement Complete’ section, you can view before and after images and other information about the new profile.
  16. Then click the ‘Home’ button and you can close the application.
