Brand Ambassador FRANCESCO GOLA

Francesco is an engineer who’s fallen in love with photography. Born in Italy in 1981, as soon as he started taking pictures he fell in love with long exposures of seascapes. For him, long exposure is a parallel universe in which to escape from the frenzy of modern life. His passion for the sea and travels let him visit some of the most iconic locations on the planet, looking at them with different eyes. Inspired by the romantic painters William Turner and Ivan Konstantinovich Aivazovsky, as well as the sacred monsters of photography like Michael Kenna and Sebastiao Salgado, Francesco has developed a special emotional relationship with nature that is clearly expressed through his seascape photography. He now lives and teaches photography in Milan, where he collaborates with companies, sites and magazines for the diffusion of photographic culture in Italy and the world.

Why is color management important to your workflow?

For me, colors are everything, as my artistic expression is based on communicating emotions through them. It is therefore a prerequisite for me that the colours are captured and reproduced as faithfully as possible to my idea: for this reason I rely only on top-quality products such as ColorCheckers, colorimeters and spectrometers from Calibrite.

What would you say is your greatest achievement to this day?

I think for me the greatest successes are related to the situations I experienced in the field rather than what I achieved with my images. While I can’t help but be proud that Apple has chosen one of my images for an iPhone presentation or that Nikon has chosen me as one of the authors of the Master of Photography series, I would trade all this for more goose-bumpy sunrises and sunsets!

What is an interesting fact about yourself?

Although the sea is my passion and I love to spend as much time as possible with it, when I can’t I love to spend my free time riding my old Vespa through the hills of my hometown.

What is a top tip for people who aspire to do what you do?

I think the most important advice I can give is to never stop doing what you love, without worrying about what people think. Don’t be discouraged by failures and don’t be misled by successes: focus instead on the experience which is the real treasure you will carry with you forever.

Color management is an essential aspect of my creative process, and for this reason I could not have a better partner than Calibrite, which brings together all the experience of X-Rite in a new, future-oriented ecosystem.
